Abstract

The flexible fibre-optic endoscope has an eyepiece, and may be connected to a light source. It may be used for visual exploration of narrow body passages. It consists of a supple tubular sheath, inside which is situated a single bundle of optical fibres which serves to convey the image as well as the illumination. The bundle of optical fibres is divided axially into two groups of fibres, one of which is connected externally to the eyepiece while the other is fed by the light source. An optical lens system may be included between the ends of the image-bearing fibres and the eyepiece, and an objective lens may be situated at the distal end. The endoscope is opaque to X-rays and may be used to examine the ureter and the renal pelvis.
