Abstract

On an lens, the distance is measured between a predetermined point on the contour and the plane tangential to the pole of the convex surface. The measurement is required to position the on the rim for mounting in a frame. A vertical pillar (11) on a base plate supports a horizontal element (13) with elements (14,15) which support a lens (L) and template (G). A second horizontal element on a second pillar supports a pivoting arm (17) which carries a probe assembly (18). This comprises a shaft (19) which extends parallel to the axis of the first horizontal element. The probe carries a disc (21) with a circular rim (22) and its shaft is always in contact with the template so that the disc contacts a point on the lens rim at which the bevel is required to be formed.
