Abstract

The position of a moving assembly is measured w.r.t. a fixed indication by an optical sensor. An electronic circuit enables the time to be measured as the assembly travels between two points. This provides a digital output for a processor to perform other functions. A rotor (14) of an electric motor rotates coaxially with a shaft (11) in a bearing (13) in the casing (12). The shaft carries a disc (10) with a reflecting radial mark (18). The rotor passes a fixed reflecting mark (17) on the casing and an optical fibre (19) in the rotor assembly passes in front of the indicator marks. The optical fibre transmits light to an opto electronic detector (20) in which bistable inputs are gated to clock a counter to provide digital output pulses.
