Abstract

A mould for producing polymeric preforms has two tools with concave surfaces, the one fits into the other with the volume of the cavity formed less than that of the preform required, the base of one tool has an inlet for the moulding material, and the system moves the two tools together. The figure shows the top (24) and bottom (26) concave mould tools with their respective part-cavities (28, 30). The top tool (24) is fixed to a vertical pressure cylinder piston (22). The upper part (32) of the bottom tool (26) fits into the top cavity (28), the outer shoulder (36) forming a stop. There is uniform temp. and material distribution. Material is not subject to shear forces, method is suitable for making e.g. sound and data record preforms.
