Abstract

To adjust the length of a mechanical transmission in order to take up mfg. tolerances and lost motion in linkages, an elliptically shaped flexible cage (121) containing a firm but flexible core (75) which is also elliptical in shape is placed in the linkage (40,54). Teeth (122,123) on the inside of the elliptical cage provide a ratchet action when the core (75) is rotated via the cruciform drive provided at its centre. When the mechanism is operated the elliptical core (75) is turned through ninety degrees changing the dimension of the ellipse along the axis of the linkage. The application relates to single point operation of two air vents in a car, where the proper closing of both vents is ensured by the lengthening of the linkage as the vents are closed.
