Abstract

A cabin is coupled to an overhead cable by releasable clamps to allow the cabin to slow down to unload at a station. This action is checked by strain gauges on an empty cabin by use of a cable with identical characteristics. A cable clamp tester (24) comprises a rail (80) to operate control pulleys (20) for the clamps (18) on a carriage clamp (10). The rail is fixed at the end of one of a pair of levers (82) which rotates on a tubular shaft (84) supported by slides (32) and the guide rail (16). The end of one lever is attached to a double acting hydraulic jack (88). A tractive spring (90) keeps the lever in the raised position. Strain gauges (58) inside calipers (26,28) measure the clamping force when the clamps (18) are closed on a bar simulating the overhead cable.
