Abstract

Appts. is claimed for purificn. of waste water by treatment with aerated, activated sludge followed by clarification in a decanting chamber. A main outer tank is subdivided from top to bottom into a vertical aeration chamber and an adjacent decantation zone. The decantation zone has recycling connections into the aeration chamber and an outlet to discharge clarified water. The aeration chamber is surrounded by the decantation zone which is itself bounded by the outer wall of the main tank. The decantation zone is divided into superimposed stages by parallel baffle plates inclined to the horizontal. Flow between stages passes between the lower edge of each baffle plate and the adjacent sidewall of the zone. The upper part of each stage has an outlet for clarified water. The main outer tank is pref. in the form of a vertical cylindrical or rectangular cross-section tower. The width of flow passages at the bottom of each stage pref. decreases successively from top to bottom of the zone. Simplicity and economy of construction. No pipework between aeration chamber and decantation zone. Activated sludge is kept in aerobic condition in the decantation zone. Depth of aeration chamber ensures efficient utilisation of air.
