Abstract

The mechanism converts shafts (1) rotation into reciprocal Linear movement or vice versa. It uses a segmental pinion (5) which effects successive engagement to two parallel rack formations (3,4). The pinion (5) may be built onto a revolving shaft (1), being toothed (6) over a 90 degree segment, and locating in a piston rod (2) slot hole with rack formations (3,4) on its opposing longitudinal edges. The slot ends (9) are half rounded without teeth, and the relative geometry is such that the pinion engages the racks (3,4) in turn to dispose the rod in opposite axial directions (7).
