Abstract

A machine for spreading bundles of straw or flax into a layer of regular density, where the stalks are parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the path of the layer, comprises (i) two walls bordering on a passage of decreasing size from the entrance to the exit; (ii) several support shafts for rollers which jut out into the passage from at least one of the walls, and which have fine teeth on their lateral surface; and (iii) means for turning the rollers in the same direction. The machine provides an entirely automatic method of lifting the stalks from the whole bundle and arranging them in a regular layer from the point of view of density and parallelism. The machine ensures automatic untying of the bundles, and withdrawal of the binding. The machine will also remove stones and other foreign material before the straw is submitted to the scutcher.
