Abstract

A housing having the shape of a plug in which >=1 measuring cell is located, forming a lost metering head for the taking of measurements by immersion into a bath of molten metal, is made either wholly of a refractory cement or of an organic resin which may have a filling material, or is made partly out of one or other of these materials. In the latter case, the component produced holds the measuring cell, and is completely enveloped in a sleeve of moulding sand. The plug-shaped housing is pushed into one end of a carton material tube. The other end of the tube fits on to a tubular lance. Pref. the sleeve of moulding sand is mixed with a phenolic resin. Provides a measuring head which is easy to produce without manufactured scrap and which works efficiently, preventing the gases of combustion of the metering head from entering the lance and damaging the conductors.
