Abstract
A mould for shaping steam heated expanded polystyrene beads has a low mass cavity shell made of copper alloy and supported within a casing supplied with steam, air, vacuum, water and a drain as required. The shell has multiple vents to admit steam from the surrounding chamber and an inlet for injection of the thermoplastic beads. The mould walls have a high thermal conductivity and a low thermal capacity, to mould with shorter cycles and a much higher thermal efficiency than use of solid mould tools with internal heating and cooling systems. Mouldings can readily be produced contg. 10% residual moisture, and moulding cycle times reduced (not quantified).
