Abstract

Punch and die are used to trim the ends of two strips which are to be butt welded; and the two strips are then aligned w.r.t. each other via two transverse rows of clamps while a trolley fitted with a welding burner travels along the joint. Pref. machine has two inlets for the tail end of one coil of strip and the front end of the next coil, so the two ends can be trimmed simultaneously via one punch and die. Above the punch is a pair of pivot shafts carrying the clamps, and also the welding trolley. Used e.g. in joining strips 300 mm wide so continuous strips can be fed into a process.
