Abstract

In the redn. of e.g. iron ores, in which an ore mixt. and a reducing agent such as a mixt. of coke and fuel oil is heated and part of the reducing agent is burnt by introducing oxygen, the fuel oil is a pyrolytic oil such as is formed in thermal or catalytic cracking of crude oil fractions. The oil serves as carbon carrier during the redn. of the ore. The pyrolytic oil suitable for the redn. of ores pref. has a viscosity of 50-700 cSt (at 50 degrees C.), a density of 0.8-1.2 g./cm.3 and S content of 0.2-6 wt.%. The oil is pref. used at a rate of 150 kg./t. pig iron. Method is economical as the heavy fraction in the cracking of crude oil fraction is utilised without further investment costs. The purification of combustion gases when using this fraction for other heating purposes is no longer necessary.
