Abstract

A pinion travelling on a spigot shaft is locked by a finger assembly whose heads hide under a sleeve. This increases the safety of operation since inadvertent radial displacement of the fingers is not possible. A pinion (1) is able to move along a shaft 7) with external channels (8) to a position where its teeth (4) engage a drive pinion (2) on another shaft (3). It is prevented from rotating by a locking assembly comprising balls (11) placed in holes radially spaced on the shaft and which are pressed outwards by springs in the housings. These balls are covered by a transmission element (13) which is moved by a fork with claws (17). Fingers (14) in radial holes engage housings (22) in the channelled shaft as the pinion is moved into the engage position.
