Abstract

Carbon black and hydrocarbons are made from used tyres by first cutting the tyres into pieces and comminuting the pieces and comminuting the pieces into fragments. The fragments are then pyrolysed in a pyrolysis reactor at a temp. and pressure and for a sufficient time to dissociate the fragments into a solid phase and a vapour phase. The solid phase is then treated at reflux with at least a first part of the residue obtd. by refining the vapour phase. The process allows economical reprocessing of scrap tyres into carbon black, combustible mineral oil, combustible gases and steel.
