Abstract

Polyamide granulate is coated with 0.01-1 wt.% of an ester of a 6-24C aliphatic satd. carboxylic acid with a 2-24C aliphatic satd. alcohol, applied from an aq. dispersion. Granulate is used to esp. for injection moulding. Polyamide is esp. polyamide-6 or polyamide-6,6. The granules pref. have dia. 1-6 mm and length 2-8 mm. The polyamide may contain the usual additives. The ester is pref. derived from a mono- or di-basic acid, and an alcohol with 1-4 OH gps. Stearyl stearate and glycerol monostearate are claimed. The amt. of the lubricant is esp. 0.05-0.5 wt. %. An extruded strand of the polyamide, 50-150 degrees C, may be passed through a 0.5-20 (2-10) wt.% aq. dispersion of the ester, or the granulate, at is not >100 degrees C, may be tumbled with a 5-75 (40-70) wt.% aq. dispersion. The ester adheres firmly to the granulate and does not cause dust-formation during processing. Shorter moulding cycles are possible.
