Abstract

Compost forms a confined bed in an open-topped box or bag etc. A harvesting grill is placed on top of a covering layer of soil and is overlaid with a supplementary layer of soil or sand, pref. to a depth of 0.5-1.0 cm. Pref. >=1 similar harvesting grill is laid immediately underneath the harvesting grill. Underneath this stack of grills there is pref. inserted a support grill with honeycomb rectangular apertures with sides 2-5 cms long and a grill depth of 1 to 5 cms. This is placed directly on top of the compost bed and filled in with sand or soil before the harvesting grill(s) is (are) applied. The support grill pref. maintains the shape of a plastic bag into which the bed is packed. The method is used for growing and harvesting mushrooms. The growing mushrooms no longer lift the harvesting grill. Horizontal displacement of the harvesting grill shears off the mycelium and detaches the mushrooms which can be lifted off together with the used top soil.
