Abstract

For incorporation in concrete roads or similar, the load-transfer device connects two slab bays which are otherwise separated by a contraction joint, comprising a rigid connector which resists shear but accommodates flexure. The connector may comprise a horizontal rectangular empilation of metal blades, and may be located spanning the joint in the base zones of the slab. Installation may take place after the slab is cast and the joint formed, the device being positioned in preformed dovetail section pockets which are filled with fire rapid hardening high strength mortar. Alternatively the connectors may be built into the pavement, being placed on chairs or similar which fix their position whilst the slab concrete is placed.
