Abstract

The stuffing box (1) may be used on domestic water taps, seals the actuating spindle (2) against water egress, and utilises belleville washers (12) to ensure axial compression of the sealing washers or packings (8). The box has a covered (9) housing (7) traversed by the spindle (2) which is surmounted by a hand wheel (3). The cover (9) screws onto the housing to apply compression to the packing through the intermediary of a thrust ring (10), the belleville washers (12) being located at either or both axial extremities of the packing (8). A hard plain washer (13) may interpose the belleville washer and the packing, and multiple belleville washers may be incorporated.
