Abstract

The journal bearing may be used to mount an automobile steering shat (1) in a bored support (2), providing for rotation of the shaft relative to the support, and comprising a pre-assembled unit which is forced fitted in the bore. Needle bearings (3) are mounted between two co-axial round section sleeves (14, 15), with the outer sleeve (4) encased in an elastic material (12). The casing absorbs the stresses arising from force-fitting without stressing the bearing cage, and the assembly also inc. compressible elastic bore rings (9) which compensate for lack of shaft fit. An alternative detail may use a casing which is reinforced by a further embedded sleeve (13), obtg an annular outer zone (12b) which absorbs fitting stresses, and obtg an inner annular zone (12a) which provides elastic support to the bearing assembly.
