Abstract

A light display is formed by a screen (1) provided with a matrix of holes in which are received the ends (2) of fibre optic light guides (3). The light guides are combined in a common guide (4) which is connected conveniently to a common light source (5). The ends (2) of the guides can be arranged to provide a desired light display for decoration or public information or the like. Use of more than one light source can provide multicoloured light displays or enable the display to be altered depending on which light sources are activated. The display provides considerable energy saving since the light source can be a low voltage low power source while providing the same light intensity as, for example, neon displays. A neon sign 5m by 1m using 40m of 33 watt tubing consumes 1320 watts. An equivalent light display as described above would use only 250 watts, a saving of about 80%. Finally, a transparent or translucent screen may front the display screen (1).
