Abstract

The mechanism is of the type in which each tube contains a coaxial auger which can be rotated on its longitudinal axis. The longitudinal edges of the auger worm are in sliding contact with the inner surface of the tube. The auger can be rotated by a power transmission connected to one end of the auger. The drive to the auger can be constant speed or variable speed. The auger pref. comprises a central core with a helical strip wound around it. The core can be longitudinally tapered and the pitch of the screw can be varied. The pitch pref. increases in the direction of flow of gap through the tube. A common drive e.g. via a drive chain pref. serves a number of augers. Used for cleaning out internal deposit from smoke tubes of boilers economisers etc. in order to improve heat transfer and raise thermal efficiency. Contacting worm cleans tube thoroughly. The mechanism is inexpensive and simple to install.
