Abstract

A system of Telex transmitting and printing messages using an alphabet such as Arabic in which the number of character styles is greater than can be catered for by international standard transmission codes enables the transmission of the complete alphabet without modification of the code or telex keyboard. A language such as Arabic has a number of basic characters which can accommodated by the standard Telex transmission coding, the basic characters being written in different styles depending on the position of the character in a word and possibly on preceding and following characters. In the system, a microprocessor in the receiving telex receives a transmitted series of characters and selects the correct character style for printing depending on the character position and other characters preceding and following. Conveniently, the microprocessor introduces a time delay between receipt and printing for such character style selection to be effected.
