Abstract

Prepn. of paper by wet lay-up of neutral and anionic fibres by addn. of a polymer binder latex to the fibre in the grinding appts. comprises adding >=3 polymer additives in the following order: (1) an aq. soln. or dispersion of a polycationic, hydrolytic, water soluble or dispersible quat. polymer salt (I) contg. bonded quaternised gps. of halides and monoamides, (2) binder latex and (3) an aq. soln. of a polyanionic, hydrophilic, water soluble acrylic acid polymer (II) with carboxy and alkali metal-, ammonium and amine salt gps. and the pulp formed into a sheet and dried. There are no metal salt impurities using the ionic binder coagulant system with the binder latex. Addn. of (I) makes the fibres cationic and attracts the binder. (II) destabilisers the binder latex and an ionic regulated deposition of binder onto the fibres takes place in the grinder. Grinding time which is necessary to give paper with a given dry strength can be shortened. The additives have little effect on the pH and solids loss in waste water is lowered.
