Abstract

An automobile tyre has a cross-section to each side wall, the upper part of which correspond to the classical mathematical formula for a radial tyre cross-section. The tangents to this curved portion are predominantly vertical and horizontal so that the metacentre of the upper part of the curve remains substantially in the same vertical plane as the load on the tyre changes. Specifically, the width is 0.25-0.45 (L), where (L) is the width of the tread. The height/width ratio is pref. 0.4-0.6. Improved vertical flexibility providing high damping and improved rigidity to shearing stresses are obtd. Very low internal heat production and no critical heating zone in the tyre walls occur.
