Abstract
The sheathed (2) cable (1) transmission inverts an applied linear displacement (F), being used e.g. to effect the simultaneous opening of a drop action air valve (20) and a lift action discharge valve (9) of a petrol tanker. At repose the cable (1) is straight e.g. vertical, being longer than the sheath and projecting at the head and foot. The relative sliding of the cable and the sheath is controlled, the head (3) and foot (4) of the cable (1) being fixed and free respectively, with the foot (6) and head (5) of the sheath also fixed and free respectively. The descent of the top valve piston (20) is transmitted (10) to the head (5) of the sheath which deflects laterally and contracts in the vertical sense. The effective now curved length of the sheath remains unaltered, the lower projecting cable length thus retracting partly into the sheath. This retraction lifts the piston (9) of the lower valve.
