Abstract

The crawler excavator has a three piece boom cantilevering from the engine, the pieces being connected end to end by horizontal pin-joins, and the bucket being mounted on the outer piece or dipper. The pin or fulcrum providing for articulation between the inner and intermediate pieces can be moved linearly between two alternative positions, thus, allowing the angle subtended by the two pieces to be modified to obtain an increase in excavatable depth. The two fulcrum positions can be at the same or different levels when the inner piece occupies its lowest position, and the fulcrum switch can be made when the machine is operational or at rest. When the angle is at its greatest an extended dipper may be mounted without reducing the discharge height.
