Abstract

The shaft seal has a rotating and a fixed sealing element. The seal is readily matched to given operating conditions for e.g. to rapid changes of the temp. without destruction and loss of the sealing effect. The sealing elements are heat treated for ensuring permanent deformation. The heat treatment subjects the seal components to load which are equal or greater than the loads met in operation. The seals are subsequently lapped to ensure final accurate dimensions of the facing sealing surfaces. In the heat treatment, the heating temp. is rapidly varied and the cooling stage after heat treatment is slow.
