Abstract

A rotating mechanical seal is disclosed which has a seat which is axially fixed and sealed in relation to a first component and an axially movable annular mechanical seal element which is assigned to a second component; it has one or more elastomeric rings which are arranged in opposite grooves in circumferential surfaces of the mechanical seal element and of its associated component, the rings being stressed in the shearing direction and, as a result, pressing the mechanical seal element axially into sealing contact with the seat and also serving as a second seal between the mechanical seal element and its associated component.
