Abstract

Seawater is circulated via a heater to a rectangular evaporating tank. The tank is covered by inclined condensing surfaces of which the lower edges drain distilled water into collecting gutters. The inclined surface are now provided by a sheet folded into parallel ridges which run across the width of the tank at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the tank. Each sheet is self-supporting between the tank sides. Each sheet is pref. made of Al alloy with its external surface anodised. The tank sides are pref. profiled in castellations corresponding to the interior of the ridges of the sheets of which the ends are supported on the castellations. Solar energy is pref. employed to heat water on its way to the evaporating tank.
