Abstract

The ball and socket type joint connects the abutting ends of two co-axial exhaust pipe lengths, is particularly applicable to automobiles with transverse mounted engines and front wheel drive, and allows the pipes to absorb engine movements. The lips to the pipe ends have complementary convex and concave spherical surfaces of which the locus lies on a longitudinal pipe axis, the concave face being formed by a packing gasket. Axial compression is applied to the joint by diametrically opposed spring piston mechanisms formed by bolts with springs, washers, and lock nuts the bolts connecting two collars which are fixed to the respective pipe ends. One collar may be welded in place and the other may be secured by diametrically opposed swivel pins of which the axes pass through the joint locus. In addn. the bolt heads may be demicylindrical to provide sec. swivel joints on a perpendicular axis.
