Abstract

Appts. for delivering radioactive gas contd. in a bottle closed by a membrane which can be perforated incorporates a delivery head fitted with two nozzles and two hollow needles. One nozzle is for delivering the gas. The other is for connection to a supply of a gas, e.g. air, to replace the radioactive gas. The hollow needles are for piercing the membrane and one is connected to each nozzle. Appts. includes means of keeping the bottle closed connected to the head and arranged so that the membrane can be placed opposite the needles, pushing the membrane against the needles so that they pierce it and enter the bottle, and injecting the replacement gas through one needle to force the radioactive gas out to the delivery nozzle. Certain radioactive gases, e.g. isotopes of xenon, partic. xenon 133 and xenon 127 are used for medical diagnosis of respiratory conditions such as emphysema and pulmonary embolism and it is necessary to be able to inject small doses previously measured. Compared to existing appts., the device can be completely dismantled for minute cleaning of each piece, and can be used for long periods without obstruction of the nozzles or needles. The parts in contact with the radioactive gas are in material impervious to the radiations emitted and the head can serve as screening allowing safe prolonged use.
