Abstract

Apparatus for light-ageint test specimens comprising thin strips held in a vertical clamp comprises an enclosure into which a narrow beam of light from a high pressure mercury vapour lamp enters via a filter window and through which a draught of air is passed at a controlled temperature. Used for accelerated light ageing of plastics materials tested as strips =0.5 mm thick. Esp. suitable for testing crosslinked polyethylene cable insulation or sheathing compounds, opt. as specimens cut from cables. The small specimens responds relatively rapidly to the effects of the concentrated beam of light. The temperature of the thin specimens responds rapidly to the atmospheric tempertures within the chamber, and are readily controlled relative to temperatures measured by thermocouples which may be in contact with the specimens.
