Abstract
The mechanism is for the movement of a shaft linearly back and forth by an electromagnet, the two final posns. being held without maintaining the coil current. The shaft (10) and electromagnet (5) are held within stepped recesses in two symmetrical blocks (1a, 1b) clamped together to form a rectangular cross-section chamber. The two end faces of the blocks carry short tubes (17, 18) with slotted walls and shaped so that a transverse peg (27, 42) in each end of the shaft forces the shaft to move around its own axis as it is driven linearly by the electromagnet. The slot shaping is such as to define two shaft posns. which are held when the power supply is removed. The movement of the shaft is against a helical spring at the end of the chamber.
