Abstract

Prodn. of K2SO4 involves (a) converting Na2SO4 and KCl in aq. medium into glaserite (I) and a glaserite soln. (II);(b) converting the pptd. (I) with KCl in aq. medium into K2SO4 and a sulphate soln., which is recycled to stage na); and (c) cooling the (II) obtd. to a temp. from +3 to -8 degrees C to form mirabilite (III) and a chloride soln., which is evapd. down to give NaCl and a conc. chloride soln. (IV). The novel feature is that (IV) is mixed with (III) and the suspension obtd. is recycled to stage (a). The process is useful for the prodn. of Cl-free fertilisers. The degree of extn. of K and sulphate ions is increased and the NaCl obtd. is suitable for sale, whilst the purity of the prod. is also higher than usual.
