Abstract
Water soluble disazo dyes which in free acid form have formula (I) are new: (where A is a benzene or naphthalene diazo group residue; M is an opt. substd. 1,4-phenylene or naphthylene group; R1 is an opt. substd. (ar)alkyl or acyl group; and R2 is H or a sulphonic acid group). The substituents are such that (I) contains 1 or 2 water solubilising acid groups, and OR1 is o- or p- to the azo gp. (I) are yellow to red dyes for wool, silk and esp. for polyamides such as Nylon 6 and Nylon 66. They have good wet fastness, but, esp. have good light fastness. They give much brighter shades than corresponding (I) with OR1 as OH. Compared to dyes prepd. by phenolic coupling, (I) show a marked bathochromic effect and give shades of much greater tinctorial intensity.
