Abstract

The hydraulic shock absorber comprises a cylinder with piston (22) dividing the cylinder into an upper and a lower chamber. The piston has two sets of axial ports (34, 36) arranged on concentric pitch circles, the inner ports (36) for flow from the upper to the lower chamber and the outer (34) for flow in opposite direction. The ports connect with annular grooves (e.g. 48) in the piston top formed by annular ribs (44, 46) which act as seats for a packet (42) of annular spring discs (50 a, b, 52 a, b) of two types. The disc (50a) nearest the seat has a segment-shaped port coinciding with the inner groove (48) whilst the disc directly superimposed (52a) has a radial slots (74a) connecting with the groove. The pack is covered by a solid disc (54).
