Abstract

5-Alkoxy-picolic acid esters of formula (I) are new In the formula R1 is 1-6C alkyl; R2 is (substd.) phenyl, phthalyzyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkoxyalkyl, or acyloxyalkyl of formula -CHR3-O-CO-R4 (where R3 is H or methyl; R4 is 1-6C alkyl, (substd.) phenyl, 1-4C alkoxy or aralkyl). The cpds. are antihypertensive agents, prepd. by esterification of 5-alkoxy-picolic acid (or its salt) by reaction with acyloxyalkyl halide, alkoxy alkyl halide or 3-bromo-phthalide of formula X-CR3H-O-C-OR4 in the presence of base or with (substd.) phenol of formula: and in the presence of condensing agent, (where X is halogen; and R5, R6 and R7 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen).
