Abstract

A device for recovering oil floating on the surface of water, e.g. the sea, has a sepn. tank which can be pushed by a suitable vessel, e.g. a powered oil tanker barge. A scoop is pivotally coupled to the front of the tank to follow the vertical movements of any waves, a float being provided on the scoop to control the depth at which it operates, either automatically or by manual control. Within the tank, a skimmer is provided to separate the oil from the water, The skimmer being pivotally mounted so that the height can be set according to the thickness of the oil layer. Baffles below the skimmer can divert the water sepd. out through lateral openings in the tank. The tank pref. has movable vanes to prevent rolling. A centrifuge in the tank separates the residual water and conveys the oil into the barge, e.g. The device is for skimming hydrocarbons, e.g. fuel oil, from the sea esp. when rough.
