Abstract

Device for sepg. two immiscible liqs. of different densities, part. an oil skimmer, the liqs. having first settled in a decantation tank into a lower layer of heavier liq. e.g. water, with an upper layer of lighter liq. e.g., oil, floating on top of it. Essentially, a hollow float is made so that it floats on the lower layer but tends to sink in the upper layer and has an entry hole just above the interface of the two layers which allows lighter liq. to flow into the float cavity from which it can be collected, e.g. by draining off thro. a flexible tube from the bottom of the float cavity and passing thro. the tank wall. Pref. the float is made of material having a specific gravity between that of water forming the lower layer and the oil, fat etc. floating on the water, e.g. made of polythene. The entry hole into the float can be in a recess in the bottom of the float and the float can be removable from the tank for emptying. The device is automatic, self-adjusting, operationally efficient and exceptionally reliable and achieves these characteristics without becoming cumbersome or expensive.
