Abstract
Alloying elements are added to molten steel during continuous casting by (a) introducing the elements into the mould, pref. in particulate or wire form to the molten steel stream close to the internal wall of the mould, and (b) rotating the metal bath in the mould around the casting axis using a rotating magnetic field pref. using a static polyphase inductor of the conventional type positioned in the mould body. Rotation of the bath accelerates dissolution of the alloying elements, disperses fine inclusions and concentrates large reaction product particles at the centre of the bath where they separate more easily.
