Abstract

The treatment of bitumen/polymer mixts., partic. mixts. of petroleum bitumen and block styrene-butadiene polymers, involves the prepn., cold, of an intermediate prod. in which the inherent properties of the polymer, e.g. styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), are preserved by its dispersion in a bitumen with aromatics content adjusted according to the nature of the polymer. The intermediate prod. is used in factory or building site; it is mixed with hot mastic asphalt or bitumen, in amts. necessary to give the required SBS content in the final prod. The bitumen/polymer properties are retained during the hot mixing of the final prod.
