Abstract
1402003 Styrene polymer/bituminous emulsions NICHIREKI CHEMICAL INDUSTRY CO Ltd 27 Sept 1972 [27 Sept 1971 30 Sept 1971] 44537/72 Headings C3P and C3N A bituminous composition comprises a styrene polymer emulsion or solution homogeneously mixed with a bituminous emulsion. The styrene polymer may be emulsified in water or an organic medium such as toluene, xylene or naphtha, or may be a solution in for example toluene xylene or naphtha, depending on whether it is soluble or insoluble in these organic media. Any cationic, anionic or non-ionic emulsion of a bituminous material such as asphalt or asphalt tar, may be used. The resulting emulsion may be mixed with a large amount of aggregate or crushed granite, and the resulting semi-solid, hardening composition used to make road or pavement surfaces. In the examples a styrene/ butadiene copolymer emulsion is used and mixed with an asphalt emulsion. Such an emulsion mixture is then mixed with crushed granite, the mixing ratio being 3 kg. or 5 kg. of polymer emulsion (calculated as solids) to 100 kg. of crushed granite, to form a paving composition.
