Abstract

Optical fibres having a coating of a material with a lower refractive index than the glass of the fibre are terminated or joined using an annulus or ring between the fibre and a mounting pipe. To avoid light losses the ring is formed of a material having a lower refractive index than the glass and is fitted on to the fibre end which has previously been stripped of the coating for the required length. Where the fibre is silica glass, the ring is pref. formed of lithium fluoride or calcium fluoride. The ring is pref. fixed to the internal surface of a tubular support.
