Abstract

In a size-grading section of the machine, mushrooms are received on a set of spaced conveyor bands which diverge progressively. Smaller mushrooms drop between the bands as larger mushrooms are carried further until they can drop through the bands. The falling mushrooms land on a transfer conveyor running at right angles to the size grading bands. The transfer conveyor comprises spaced pairs of cable and a prod. orientator to set the mushroom stalks between cables which support the underside of the mushroom head. While held in the cables of the transfer conveyor, each mushroom is presented to a first trimming saw, which removes the tip of the stalk, and then to a second trimming saw. The second saw equalises the stalk lengths of all similarly sized mushrooms carried between a pair of cables. The prod. orientator pref. comprises a conveyor. In addition, one of each pair of cables is held temporarily lower than the other just downstream of the brushes. The mushrooms are sized and trimmed in the dry state and require no further treatment prior to distribution. In each size category the mushrooms have stalks trimmed to a common length .
