Abstract

A press tool is provided (a) with a coolant fluid circulation system close the surface of at least one of the tool faces, and (b) with a device for gripping the borders of the sheet of material being press formed. Used for hot press forming sheet or fibrous mats made of thermoplastic material, e.g. shaped polyolefin carpets for vehicles. The cooling is applied to minimise moulding cycles. Gripping of the borders prevents their deformation as the press is closed. Suitably the press surface incorporates an array of tubes made of a material which is a good thermal conductor, the tubes being set in a (porous) matrix comprising a blend of epoxy resin and a thermally conductive powdered filler. The tubes generally follow the surface contours. The coolant may be a chilled or cryogenic fluid, opt. released via pores along the tubes.
