Abstract

The composite cast iron and concrete manhole cover comprises a dished casting(1) which is filled with concrete (2). The casting is open at the top and circular in plan, having a uniformly high vertical edge wall(4) projecting from a spherically segmental base(3). The base is concave, the unit having a uniform wall thickness, and the edge wall returning internally to form an annular bearing surface(5). Radial ribs(8) are used to stiffen the edge walls, their internal projection being limited by a transition zone (11) between the edge walls and the base. The radius(R) of the base may be constant for 90% of the effective dia. of the cover, having a value of between 1 and 3 times that dia.
