Abstract

The hammer transmits blows to the tool holder from a freely-moving striker piston reciprocating in a cylinder under the effect of variations in an air cushion pressure. The piston is held by a catcher ring in the event of forward deflection of the tool holder due to cessation of resistance. The tool or tool holder (27) is thrust by a spring (21) in the working direction, moving it clear of the path of the piston in the absence of resistance. The catcher ring (15, 16) is an elastically distorting component located axially on the piston, and expandible briefly in the radial direction by ramp faces on an annular shoulder (17) on it. It lies clear in the axial direction of the path followed by the tool, tooholder and impulse transmission member (27, 30, 25).
