Abstract

A system is used for compression and expansion or quantitising of differentially coded digital signals for a TV transmission. The method reduces the numeric loss of the signal data such that the image signal remains satisfactory. The quantisation characteristics are partially non-symmetric about zero involving the number and value of thresholds and reconstruction levels of the differences between the real values of the signal sample and its estimated value. The characteristics has less levels for its non-symmetric region for negative differences than for positive and has a slope decreasing more rapidly in the negative region than the positive.
