Abstract

A three-dimensional textile material is formed from e.g. carbon, graphite or silica fibres, impregnated with e.g. epoxy or phenolic resin. The appts. for forming the textile is a mandrel support offering the internal shape of the textile produced. Pins or pegs are introduced into the mandrel, to define the corridors for positioning lengthwise and crosswise yarns in a succession of superimposed layers. The mandrel is formed of rigid foam of e.g. polyurethane or phenolic resin and the pegs can be implanted directly into the mandrel by pressure. The pegs are formed of filaments of polyamides, glass, silica, carbon or boron and are pre-impregnated with polymerised resin to confer the necessary rigidity. The textile, impregnated with resin, is cured in situ, and the materials of the mandrel and the pins are suitably constructed to resist the conditions of the later treatments. The method eliminates a sewing process to hold the three-dimensional fabric in place of the mandrel. The pins are surface-roughened which assists in holding the textile layers in place on the mandrel without the need for sewing. There is no need to remove the material from the forming mandrel to another, more heat-resistant to cure the resin. The pins may be removed from the mandrel through the material after curing. The same mandrel is used for both forming and curing and afterwards, this is removed by milling with a cutting tool, to leave the hollow body of the three-dimensional material.
